How to Get Coconut Oil Out of Hair

Coconut oil has many benefits and you may want to use it for getting rid of dryness in your hair and dandruff as well. Whether you mix it with other ingredients or use it just like this, you may end up with a big problem: how to get it out of your hair.

Here are some useful tips when you find yourself in a pickle because of the coconut oil.

  1. Use shampoo

This may be one of the easiest ways to handle the problem with the coconut oil left in your hair. You simply rinse your hair with the shampoo and your typical conditioner so that the hair looks nice and clean, after all. It’s a good idea to use a shampoo designed for the oily hair, though.

If this doesn’t seem to give results, try a clarifying shampoo that is especially made to remove the buildup in your hair, coconut oil including.

When you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to wash your hair, you may want to try a dry shampoo instead. A pure homemade dry shampoo is a great and healthy option too.

You can very easily mix some baking flour, rice flour, corn starch and uncooked oatmeal. Sprinkle the dry shampoo onto your scalp and leave it for 5 minutes or so. You finish by brushing it off, but keep in mind you should wash your hair later on so that the dry shampoo doesn’t build up, blocking the pores.

  1. Aloe Vera

We all know that Aloe Vera presents impressive anti-oxidant abilities. It’s a great plant that contains enzymes, minerals and vitamins that work together for removing oil from your hair.

Here are some easy ways to use Aloe Vera to get rid of oil in your hair, coconut oil including:

  • Use a teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel and mix it with your typical shampoo
  • Add a teaspoon of lemon juice

  • Massage the mixture into your hair and scalp and leave it there for 10 minutes
  • Rinse it off with some lukewarm water. Never use hot water as it’s going to coagulate all the proteins within the egg…. which is a terrible mess
  • You may finish with some castile soap for massaging your hair. Don’t forget to rinse off too.
  1. Lemons

Lemons are also a great way to get rid of the coconut oil in your hair. Lemon juice contains citric acid that cleans dirt and oil from both your hair and skin, balancing the pH level of the scalp at the same time.

Here are some steps to do:

  • Get the juice from 2 lemons, adding 2 cups of water too
  • You should add 3 tablespoons of honey for better results
  • Massage the mixture into your scalp and hair and leave it there for a couple of minutes
  • Wash it off with lukewarm water
  1. Black tea

Due to the tannic acid in its formula, black tea presents great astringent properties and this means it helps you get rid of build-up of excess oil on the scalp. Follow these steps for best results:

  • Add a good amount of black tea leaves in a cup of water
  • Let it boil for 10 minutes, strain the leaves and let the decoction to cool down
  • Apply plenty of it onto your hair and scalp once it gets to room temperatures
  • Let it stay for 5-10 minutes

  1. Mint and rosemary

You simply mix a tablespoon of rosemary sprigs and mint leaves in two cups of boiling water. You may also add some lemon juice (from a single lemon is the right amount) and use the mixture to get rid of the coconut oil from your hair.

  1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes may help you balance the pH level of your scalp as they have an acidic content. They’re also great for removing unpleasant odors from your hair, which may happen when using coconut oil.

  • Apply the mixture on your hair and leave it there for 30 minutes
  • Use some cold water to wash it off

  1. Paper towels

This is an urgent solution when you have nothing else near you. You get some paper towels and simply press them on your hair as it’s going to soak up all excess oil. You don’t want to do it like this, though.

  1. Baking soda and detergents

Remember that liquid dishwashing detergents are used to remove the strongest stains/dirt from your utensils. If you’re only using small quantity, you may apply it to damp your hair and remove coconut oil. You want to use as less as possible, only if nothing else has worked as it’s not made to use on human hair in the first place.

You can also grab some baking soda from the kitchen, add some water until you get a nice paste and apply the paste all over your hair. You should rinse it with warm water after 20 minutes.

Take care of your hair

You don’t want to go excessive on your hair and wash it daily, as you are going to wash up all the oil from the hair. It’s only a matter of time until your hair gets dry, if you’re washing it daily.

Keep in mind that you should always use cold/lukewarm water when you’re cleaning or rinsing your hair for the same reasons. Despite of what you may think, hot water is only stimulating the oil-producing glands and actually makes it worse. Cold water does the opposite and helps the hair follicles close up as well.

Last but not least, if you’re determined to use coconut oil on your hair, try not to get the very first thing that pops into your eyes when shopping. Check it with a doctor first as he/she’s the best person to tell you which kind may fit the best your hair.
